A tribute to Kofi Awoonor

KOFI AWOONOR, the Ghanaian poet and writer was killed in the Nairobi shopping center attack on September 21, 2013.
Here is one of his most famous poems... about his own death.

THE JOURNEY BEYOND – 
The bowling cry through door posts
carrying boiling pots
ready for the feasters.
Kutsiami the benevolent boatman;
When I come to the river shore
please ferry me across
I do not have on my cloth-end
the price of your stewardship.


Le voyage d'au-delà
Le cri roule à travers les piliers
porteur des plats bouillants
prêts pour les commensaux.
Kutsiami, passeur bienveillant
quand je serai sur la berge du fleuve
Emmène moi de l'autre côté, s'il te plait,
Je n'ai pas au pan de mon étoffe

de quoi payer ta traversée.
